PAY RANGE

The Target Pay Range for this position is $35.38-$43.22 hourly. The full Pay Range is $27.50-$51.11 hourly. At BECU, compensation decisions are determined using factors such as relevant job-related skills, experience, and education or training. Should an offer for employment be made, we will consider individual qualifications. In addition to your salary, compensation incentives are available for the hired applicant. Incentives are performance based and targets vary by role.

SUMMARY

The Sr. Payroll Specialist is responsible for the timely and accurate processing of BECU payroll and tax reporting. This person(s) will have a thorough knowledge of the payroll system and all federal and state laws pertaining to the processing of Payroll.  The Sr. Payroll Specialist will be well versed in BECU HR policies and practices as well as BECU Total Rewards programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform all responsibilities in accordance with BECU Competencies, compliance, regulatory and Information Protection Program.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of federal, state, and local laws pertaining to payroll interpret and apply to BECU’s payroll standard practices.
  • Process multi-state payroll for BECU accurately and in a timely manner. 
  • Initiate, prepare, and balance quarterly and year-end tax filings.
  • Establish BECU’s payroll presence in new states as needed ensuring compliance with all state and local employment tax laws.
  • Partner with leave management vendor to ensure accurate leave payments or payroll offsets for protected leave of absence.
  • Coordinate leave payment process and validate leave management reporting against payroll payments to assure accuracy.
  • Process and prepare wage-withholding orders.
  • Develop and participate in internal processes improvement and efficiencies,
  • Lead and/or represent the payroll function on internal project teams across the organization.
  • Support annual audits for 401(k), Pension Plan and others as needed.
  • Process and verify initial set up and updates to Direct Deposit, W-4, employee name, and Address Changes.
  • Manage employee and payroll records in a timely manner.
  • Partner with Accounting team on reconciliations and reporting
  • Provide appropriate, timely responses to verbal and/or written communications with internal customers for information on items such as paychecks, deductions, taxes and earnings, and other payroll related information and external requests for verification of employment. 
  • Maintain effective communication with all Credit Union employees (internal customers) to ensure coordination and exchange of information for accomplishing Credit Union goals.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or accounting or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum five years of recent payroll processing and tax reporting experience required. Multi-state experience preferred.
  • Experience with Workday software preferred.
  • Excellent PC skills, with the ability to learn new software.
  • Detailed and number oriented, with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent conceptual, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work well under deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written skills to effectively communicate in the English language.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with management, staff, and outside contacts.
  • Ability to work independently, and as a team member, while using discretion in decision making and sound judgement in problem solving.
  • Ability to exercise confidentiality and discretionary judgement.
  • Full time hours required, with additional hours as necessary to accomplish goals, objectives, and projects.
  • Ability to commute to Tukwila, WA one day every other Wednesday for payroll processing.
  • Certified Payroll Professional designation or continuing education preferred.
